Welcome to AI-LIFE
The International Network of Artificial Intelligence for the Life Sciences (AI-LIFE) is a network of experts at the interface of machine learning and the life sciences.
The mission of AI-LIFE is to foster research, training and international collaborations at the interface of artificial intelligence and the life sciences.
A key feature of AI-LIFE is the network members’ participation in the thesis advisory committee meetings of each other’s students.
How to Join
If you would like to join AI-LIFE as a principal investigator, please follow these steps:
- Send an email to ai-life-office@biochem.mpg.de and include your CV, a link to your Google Scholar/ORCID profile and a link to your professional homepage.

Statutes
International Network of "Artificial Intelligence for the Life Sciences" (AI-LIFE)
Draft statutes
- AI-LIFE is an international network for fostering machine learning in the life sciences, in particular by providing a pool of thesis advisory committee members for doctoral studies in this field.
- Faculty members (typically Full, Associate, Assistant or Adjunct Professors or equivalent positions in industry or research organizations) can become Principal Investigator (PI) members of AI-LIFE, if approved by the Board of AI-LIFE.
- Application for PI membership is done by candidates submitting (1) their CV, (2) the link their Google Scholar or ORCID profile, and (3) the link to their professional homepage by email to ai-life-office@biochem.mpg.de. The AI-LIFE Board will decide upon admission.
- AI-LIFE membership is contingent on accepting that the name and affiliation of the candidate may be published on AI-LIFE websites and be used in internal communication within the network.
- Any AI-LIFE PI member can register their new PhD students in AI-LIFE. These PhD student members are then supposed to hold annual thesis advisory committee meetings, with their advisor as the first, and two further AI-LIFE PI members as second and third committee member.
- AI-LIFE PhD student members should be registered during the first year of their doctoral studies. Later registration is possible if all three AI-LIFE committee members agree.
- On average, an AI-LIFE PI member should participate per year in a number of AI-LIFE committee meetings that equals three times the number of AI-LIFE PhD student members of this AI-LIFE PI member.
- AI-LIFE is non-exclusive and can be combined with memberships in other graduate networks, e.g., such as Marie Curie Innovative Training Networks, Graduate Schools or ELLIS.
- AI-LIFE does not assume any legal liability for the content and composition of the committee meetings, their occurrence and outcomes. The rules of the degree-granting university apply instead. It is possible that the AI-LIFE committee and the PhD thesis advisory/defense committee, defined by the local university rules, are not the same. It is the responsibility of the PhD student and the PI to clarify with the degree awarding institution whether the rules of the AI-LIFE comply with the local rules.
- AI-LIFE PI member status must be renewed every 5 years through reapplication. Active participation in network TAC meetings is a major consideration for readmission.
- The AI-LIFE board consists of five PI members, elected by all AI-LIFE PI members in an online election every 3 years. These five board members elect one president among themselves, the other four act as vice presidents.
- AI-LIFE statutes can be modified by the AI-LIFE Board in unanimous votes. Modifications must be communicated to all AI-LIFE PI members and PhD student members by email.
- By accepting membership, PI members and PhD student members consent to receiving mails from the mailing lists of the network. To unsubscribe from the mailing lists, please send an email to ai-life-office@biochem.mpg.de .
